Help an artist in need, bring a truly great comic to life
We here at Saint James understand first-hand the hardships associated with being a freelance artist. Bottom-line: It’s a tough world out there, even for established artists with a solid track record.
That being said, one of our favorite artists around these parts, Brahm Revel, needs your help. Haven’t heard of him? You will.
Brahm (who we interviewed in 2009) has recently started a Kickstarter campaign to help fund the second volume of his critically-acclaimed Guerillas series. The first volume was put out originally through Image as individual issues, then it was collected and published via Oni Press. Good for him, yes, but, as with so many creator-owned projects, the bulk of the work and funding falls directly on the artist’s shoulders, meaning he’s got to get this second volume done all by himself.
And, for those of you unfamiliar with Kickstarter, Mr. Revel illuminates:
“That’s where Kickstarter comes in. This is a wonderful crowd funding platform which allows me to offer you unique rewards, such as sketches and original pages, and in return, you are able to help support an independent artist finish the next chapter of his vision.”
Couldn’t agree more. Oh, and a quick synopsis of the project:
GUERILLAS […] takes place during the Vietnam Conflict and follows an overwhelmed new recruit who accidentally falls in with a platoon of specially trained chimpanzees. Lost in the jungle and with no options but to follow the troop of apes, the new recruit soon begins to question if these chimps are really a stable fighting unit or a volatile pack of animals. GUERILLAS looks at the nature of war, the nature of man, and all the gray areas in between. It’s also an action-packed thrill-ride, full of jungle warfare and simian acrobatics.
There’s a free preview of Volume 1 right here. And, as we’ve (quite exhaustively) read the first volume, we can attest…this is by far one of the best comic series in recent years. (It’s also good to note that the rewards he’s offering for helping fund the project are quite impressive.)
You can find out more information including a full list of rewards (and donate) to the Guerillas Kickstarter campaign here.
